Sleep Difficulties: A Psychological View

Poor sleep often begins with a stressful period and then continues on its own, maintained by the very things we do to try to fix it.

The effort paradox

Sleep is one of the few things that gets worse the harder you try. Going to bed early to 'catch up', staying in bed awake, and checking the clock all weaken the association between the bed and sleep.

Behavioural sleep strategies work by rebuilding that association: consistent rise times, getting out of bed when awake for long periods, and protecting the hour before sleep.

Where relaxation and hypnotherapy fit

Guided relaxation, breathing work and hypnotherapeutic techniques can help lower pre-sleep arousal for some clients. They are used alongside behavioural strategies, not instead of them, and only where assessment indicates they are appropriate.

Persistent sleep problems should also be reviewed medically, as several physical conditions affect sleep directly.

Common questions
