What Actually Happens in a First Therapy Session

Uncertainty about the first session stops many people from booking. It is a structured, ordinary conversation — and you stay in control of what you share.

The structure

The first appointment is an assessment. It covers what brought you, how long it has been happening, how it affects daily life, relevant history, and what you would like to be different.

You are not required to disclose anything you are not ready to discuss. Pace is negotiated, and difficult material is approached only when there is enough stability to do so safely.

What you leave with

Usually an initial understanding of what is maintaining the difficulty, a proposed approach, an idea of session frequency, and agreed goals that can be reviewed as work continues.

If a different service or a medical review would serve you better, that recommendation is made openly.

Common questions

Is what I say confidential?
Yes, within professional and legal limits — the main exception being a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, which is explained to you at the outset.
Can the first session be online?
Yes. Online assessment follows the same structure as an in-person appointment.
