Mental Health Support in Lahore
Lahore has more psychological services than it did ten years ago, and far less clarity about how to use them. This page explains what care actually looks like here, and where in the city you can access it.
Who does what in Lahore
Three different professions are often described with the same word. A clinical psychologist assesses and treats psychological difficulties through therapy and does not prescribe medicine. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe. A counsellor offers supportive conversation, often without a clinical assessment. Many people in Lahore start with whichever one they were referred to first; the more useful question is what your difficulty needs, and that is what an assessment is for.
What a first appointment involves
The first session is an assessment, not treatment. It covers what you are experiencing, how long it has been going on, your history, sleep, work or study, family context and any risk. At the end you should leave with a shared understanding of the problem and a proposed plan — how many sessions, how often, and what change would look like. If someone gives you a diagnosis and a package of twenty sessions in the first ten minutes, that is a reason to ask more questions.
Cost, time and travel in a city like this
Fees in Lahore vary widely, and the highest fee is not a proxy for quality. Budget for the whole course rather than one session, and be realistic about travel: a clinic across the city that takes fifty minutes each way in Ferozepur Road traffic is a clinic you will eventually stop attending. Consider which side of the city you can reach reliably at the time of day you would be attending, or use online sessions for the weeks when travel is not possible.
Confidentiality, and why it matters more here
In a city where family and social networks overlap heavily, the fear of being recognised in a waiting room keeps people away from care. Session content is confidential; it is not shared with family members without your consent, with the narrow exceptions of serious risk to life. You are entitled to ask any practitioner directly how records are kept and who has access to them before you book.
