Stress, Pressure and Burnout: Where the Line Is

Pressure is part of working life. Burnout is different: it is what happens when demand stays high and recovery never arrives.

The warning signs

Exhaustion that rest does not relieve, growing cynicism about work you once cared about, irritability at home, difficulty concentrating, and physical symptoms such as headaches, tension or disturbed sleep.

People often notice the physical signs first and attribute them to something else. Taking them seriously early makes the work of recovery shorter.

Why willpower is not the answer

Burnout is a mismatch between demand and recovery, not a character weakness. Pushing harder usually deepens it.

Support focuses on restoring recovery: sleep and routine, realistic boundaries, workload negotiation where possible, and skills that lower physiological arousal during the day.

What support may include

Stress management work commonly combines assessment of current demands, cognitive work on perfectionism and over-responsibility, practical boundary-setting, and mind–body relaxation techniques.

Where sleep has been disrupted for a long period, that is addressed directly rather than treated as a side issue.

Common questions

Do I need to leave my job to recover?
Usually not. Most work focuses on changing the pattern of demand and recovery rather than the job itself.
How quickly do people notice a difference?
It varies. Focused short-term support can bring early progress for some people, but the pace differs for everyone.
