What actually happens in a session
You remain awake, aware and in control throughout. The work uses guided relaxation and focused attention to make it easier to engage with therapeutic suggestions, imagery and rehearsal.
Sessions are agreed in advance: what will be worked on, how, and what you would like to be different afterwards.
Where it may be used
Applications commonly include stress and relaxation, sleep difficulties, habit change, confidence, performance anxiety, specific fears and phobias, emotional regulation and mind–body relaxation.
It is used as one part of an individualized plan, chosen when it suits the concern and the person — not as a routine add-on.
Its limits
Hypnotherapy is not a cure and is not appropriate for every concern or every person. Suitability is decided after assessment.
No responsible practitioner will guarantee a result or a timeframe. Where a different approach is better suited, that is what will be recommended.
Common questions
- Can I be made to do something against my will?
- No. You remain aware and in control, and you can end the session at any point.
- Is hypnotherapy offered on its own?
- It is normally offered as part of a wider psychological plan agreed with you after assessment.
